On the data. One film, and it is fiction wearing a biography's clothes. The central claim, that Antonio Salieri poisoned or destroyed Mozart out of envy, has essentially no historical support. It comes from a rumour that circulated after Mozart's death, was used by Pushkin in 1830, and was taken up by Peter Shaffer for his 1979 play. Salieri was a respected composer who taught Beethoven, Schubert and Liszt, and his reputation has never really recovered from this film. It won eight Academy Awards including best picture and best actor for F. Murray Abraham, who played Salieri. Tom Hulce, who played Mozart, was nominated in the same category and lost to him. It was shot largely in Prague, partly because Communist-era Prague still looked like an eighteenth century city and partly because it was cheap. A director's cut released in 2002 runs about twenty minutes longer and restores a sequence that changes how one character behaves. Milos Forman preferred it; many viewers do not. The music is real throughout and was recorded by Neville Marriner on condition that not a note of Mozart was altered.
