On the data. The individual titles of the 54 numbered books are not listed here. They exist and are easy to find, but this page only lists titles verified to the standard used everywhere else on the site, and a reliable list of all 54 with publication months could not be assembled in one pass. The main series is therefore one entry, and the eight in-continuity companions plus the two gamebooks are listed individually because their placement in the reading order is the genuinely useful information. On authorship, which readers ask about constantly: K. A. Applegate is a pen name for two people, Katherine Applegate and her husband Michael Grant, who received no cover credit at the time. Applegate wrote books 1 to 24 herself, along with all four Megamorphs and all four Chronicles books, then again wrote 26, 32, and the finale in 53 and 54. Most of the run from 25 to 52 was ghostwritten from her detailed outlines, with one to two months per book, edited for continuity by Applegate and series editor Tonya Alicia Martin. The most prolific ghostwriter was Ellen Geroux with five books, followed by Kimberly Morris with four and Lisa Harkrader with three. Be careful with one widely copied error: a line stating that only the first four books were by Applegate and that books 5 to 14 were ghostwritten is about a different Applegate series entirely, not this one. The television series is 26 episodes, 20 then 6, and both sources checked agree on that split. The dates are messier than the counts. Canadian and United States broadcasts diverged: the six second season episodes were produced and aired in Canada in September and October 1999 but did not reach American television until February and March 2000, which is why the show is described as ending in 1999 in some places and 2000 in others, sometimes on the same page. Season one also aired out of order in the United States, and episode ordering within season two varies by platform, with streaming services often flattening all 26 into one run. On adaptations, there are two and neither has produced anything. A feature film was announced in 2020 with Scholastic Entertainment and Picturestart; Applegate and Grant publicly withdrew their support in October 2020 citing insufficient involvement, and the film never materialised, though it is still listed as to be announced on the producer's slate rather than formally cancelled. In April 2026 Ryan Coogler's Proximity Media acquired the series to develop as a television show for Disney Plus with Bayan Wolcott as showrunner. That is in development with no date, no cast and no episode order, so it is not listed. A graphic novel line adapting the books one volume at a time began in 2020 and has reached six volumes covering books one to six.
