The DC Universe Animated Original Movies

One direct to video banner holds two separate connected continuities and dozens of films that connect to nothing, and the cover art never tells you which one you are holding.

Where to start with The DC Universe Animated Original Movies

Do not start at the beginning of the banner. The first six years of it are unconnected one-offs, and the thing most people are actually looking for is one of the two connected runs. The DC Animated Movie Universe is the longer and the more rewarding of the two, so this path starts there, in story order rather than release order.

  1. 1
Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox

The Flash rewrites history and creates the timeline that the next fifteen films take place in. Nothing before it in this continuity exists, which makes it a genuine ground floor.

  2. 2
Justice League: War Justice League: War

The team meets for the first time in the new timeline. It is the film that establishes who these versions of these characters are, and every later entry assumes it.

  3. 3
Justice League: Throne of Atlantis Justice League: Throne of Atlantis

Picks up directly from War and brings in Aquaman. It came out eleven months after Son of Batman but is set before it, which is the first place release order misleads you.

  4. 4
Son of Batman Son of Batman

Introduces Damian Wayne, whose story runs through four more films. Watch it after Throne of Atlantis and the League's status quo lines up correctly.

  5. 5
Batman vs. Robin Batman vs. Robin

A direct sequel to Son of Batman. From here the run mostly follows release order, so you can stop consulting a list.

  6. 6
The Death of Superman The Death of Superman

The centre of the whole continuity and the reason the earlier films matter. It is the first half of a story that finishes in the next film, so do not stop here.

  7. 7
Justice League Dark: Apokolips War Justice League Dark: Apokolips War

The last film of the continuity, and it is built entirely out of things established across the previous fifteen. Watched cold it is incomprehensible, watched in order it is the payoff.

Then what? Fill in the rest of the DC Animated Movie Universe group in the order shown, then watch the short Constantine: The House of Mystery, which is its epilogue. The Tomorrowverse is a completely separate second run and can be started at any time with Superman: Man of Tomorrow; it takes ten films and ends with the three part Crisis on Infinite Earths. Everything in the standalone group needs no preparation at all, and Batman: Under the Red Hood, All-Star Superman and Batman: Gotham by Gaslight are the usual recommendations for someone who wants one film rather than a project.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below — tick anything off in either place.

Your progress is saved on this device automatically. To carry it to another device, move the code below.

The code holds only this franchise. The link opens the tracker with your progress already filled in — good for showing someone where you're at. The image is a picture you can keep anywhere: scan the code on it with a phone, or drag the file back in below.

Drag a SagaList image here, or .

This reads the progress stored inside the picture, so nothing has to be retyped. If the image has been through a messaging app it may have been re-encoded and lost that — scan the code on it instead, or copy the code printed along the bottom.

Restoring replaces the progress currently saved on this device for the franchise the code belongs to.
