.hack

Two anime series, several OVAs and two films, and the first series was designed to be watched alongside the games rather than instead of them.

Where to start with .hack

Sign first. After that the answer depends on whether you are playing the games.

  1. 1
    .hack//Sign .hack//Sign

Twenty six episodes from 2002. It stands alone reasonably well and it is the thing this franchise is remembered for. Be warned that almost nothing happens in the action sense; it is a series of conversations.

  2. 2
    .hack//Liminality .hack//Liminality and .hack//Legend of the Twilight

Four episodes that ran alongside the original four games, showing the real world side of the same events. It was designed to be watched between games and works after Sign.

  3. 3
    .hack//Roots .hack//Roots

Twenty six episodes, and it is a prologue to the G.U. games rather than a story of its own. It stops rather than ends. Knowing that in advance saves a lot of annoyance.

Then what? G.U. Trilogy is the games' cutscenes cut into a film. Quantum is three OVA episodes with a new cast. The 2012 film is effectively a reboot.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
