Gladiator

On the data. Two films, and everything interesting here is about the gap between them. Gladiator II arrived twenty four years after the first and follows Lucius, the boy in the first film, grown up. Who his father is is the question the sequel is built on, so knowing the first film is not optional. On history: the first film gets the broad shape of Commodus right, including that he fought in the arena himself, and invents almost everything else. Marcus Aurelius was not murdered by his son as far as anyone knows, there was no Maximus, and the Republic was not about to be restored. The second film is looser still, including a sequence involving sharks in a flooded Colosseum that has become the thing people argue about. Naval battles were staged in Roman arenas; the sharks were not. Ridley Scott has talked about a third film. Nothing is confirmed. There was a long and famous period when a sequel was being developed with a script by Nick Cave that brought Maximus back through the intervention of the gods. It was never made, and reading about it is a genuine pleasure.
