Good Will Hunting

On the data. One film, and the writing credit is the story. Matt Damon started it as a coursework assignment at Harvard and he and Ben Affleck developed it together over several years. Both were largely unknown. They won the Academy Award for original screenplay, which almost never happens to a first script by two actors in their twenties. Robin Williams won best supporting actor for it, his only Academy Award. The bench scene in the Boston Public Garden was improvised in part, and the moment Williams breaks during the repeated line was not scripted. The bench is now a minor place of pilgrimage. The film was originally written with a thriller subplot involving government agents, which Gus Van Sant removed. It made both writers stars within a year.
