On the data. Two complete television adaptations exist, and they are not two halves of one thing. Nippon Animation's 1999 series ran 62 episodes on Fuji TV from 16 October 1999 to 31 March 2001 and stopped partway through the Yorknew City arc. Three OVA sets carried on from there, numbered as if they were more episodes of the same show: eight episodes in 2002, numbered 63 to 70, which finish Yorknew City; eight in 2003, numbered 71 to 78, which begin Greed Island; and fourteen in 2004, numbered 79 to 92, which finish it. That is 92 episodes in total and the 1999 version ends there, before the Chimera Ant arc, with no ending of its own. Madhouse's 2011 series ran 148 episodes on Nippon TV from 2 October 2011 to 23 September 2014, covers all of the same ground, and then keeps going through Chimera Ant and the Election arc to the point the manga had reached. This site treats the 2011 series as the spine, and the reason is practical rather than a judgement about which is better directed. It is the only version that gets to the end of the animated story, it is the only version with an official English release, and the OVAs the 1999 version needs in order to be even partly complete were never released in English at all. Guides that tell you to watch the 1999 series first and continue into the OVAs are describing something most people cannot legally obtain. Watch the 1999 version second, as a different treatment of material you already know, if the older direction and slower pacing appeal. The two versions are not compatible with each other: they have different casts, different scripts and different amounts of added material, and no episode of one continues an episode of the other. That is why only the 2011 series carries a story order position on this page and everything else is left out of it. Season numbering for the 2011 series is a streaming invention. In Japan it was one continuous run of 148 weekly episodes with no season breaks. Streaming services split it into six blocks at episodes 26, 38, 58, 75 and 136, and those splits do not line up with the arc boundaries: the Heavens Arena arc ends at episode 36 but the block runs to 38, and the Yorknew City arc begins at 37. The episode numbers 1 to 148 are continuous whichever service you use, so navigate by those and ignore the season labels. The 1999 OVA episode numbers, 63 to 92, are the numbering used by the discs themselves and by most listings, which is why the OVAs are often described as episodes rather than as separate releases. Sources vary on whether the Greed Island OVA is eight or nine episodes; this site uses eight, which is what the four volume release and the continuous numbering to 92 both give. The two films, Phantom Rouge on 12 January 2013 and The Last Mission on 27 December 2013, were made by Madhouse with the 2011 cast but tell original stories that do not come from the manga, and in places contradict it. Nothing in the series refers back to either. Watch order guides commonly slot Phantom Rouge after episode 61 and The Last Mission after episode 110, which is a convention based on when they were released rather than anything the films state, so they are left outside story order here. The 1998 pilot was a short screened at the Jump Super Anime Tour, directed by Noriyuki Abe, made before the 1999 series and never given a commercial release. On availability, this moves around. The 2011 series was removed from Crunchyroll on 25 March 2026 when the licence lapsed and, in the United States, remains on Netflix, Hulu and Tubi, with both films on Netflix; other countries differ. There is still no legal streaming of the 1999 series or of any of the OVAs in English speaking markets, and physical copies are the only reliable route. On the manga, which matters because it decides whether any of this ever continues: Yoshihiro Togashi has taken repeated long hiatuses, the series returned in June 2026 with chapter 411 and had reached chapter 415 by 2 August 2026, and publication is explicitly when chapters are ready rather than on a fixed schedule. Everything after the Election arc, including the Dark Continent material, has never been animated, and no further adaptation has been announced.
