The Guildford Four were convicted in 1975 of the pub bombings and freed in 1989 when it emerged that police had suppressed evidence and fabricated interview notes. The Maguire Seven, including Gerry Conlon's father Giuseppe, were convicted separately; Giuseppe died in prison. The film takes liberties. Gerry Conlon and his father were not held in the same cell. The lawyer played by Emma Thompson is a composite, and Gareth Peirce, the real solicitor, publicly objected to the portrayal and to a courtroom scene that did not happen in that form. Daniel Day-Lewis reportedly stayed in character through the shoot and asked to be kept awake and interrogated before the confession scenes. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won none. Gerry Conlon spent the rest of his life campaigning on miscarriages of justice and died in 2014.
