Mamma Mia!

On the data. Two films. The second one is the reason this page needs explaining. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is a sequel and a prequel in one film, and the two halves are interleaved rather than sequential. The present day strand picks up after the first film: Donna has died, roughly a year earlier, and Sophie is reopening her mother's hotel as a memorial. The 1979 strand shows young Donna arriving on Kalokairi and meeting Harry, Bill and Sam, dramatising the diary entries the first film only described. The film cuts between them so that the two rhyme, with Sophie showing off the finished hotel against young Donna finding the ruin it was built from, and a storm in each period. That structure means there is no chronological order available. You cannot watch 1979 first because it exists only inside a film that also takes place after the first one, and watching the second film first would give away the first film's central question. Release order is the only order. Neither period is labelled on screen. Era is done with costume, casting and music rather than captions, and no year cards appear that we have been able to confirm. The film's internal arithmetic does not survive scrutiny either: dialogue about Sophie's age puts the first film around 2000 and the second only about five years later, while the second film's present day is full of smartphones and tablets. No setting years are given here for that reason. Two smaller things people expect and do not get. Meryl Streep is in the second film for one scene near the end, not as a co-lead. And the 1979 strand omits Donna's encounter with Harry on the island, which the first film's diary sequence describes, so the prequel quietly contradicts the original on that point. A third film has been in development since at least 2020. It has no greenlight, no cast and no date. Reports in January 2026 named a director, sourced from a podcast interview rather than from Universal, so nothing is listed.
