On the data. One film, and its structure is the whole of it. The colour scenes run backwards: each one takes place before the one before it. The black and white scenes run forwards. They meet in the middle, which is the point at which the film ends and everything you have been told is reframed. No American distributor would take it for about a year after it was finished. It played festivals, built word of mouth, and was eventually released by Newmarket, where it made far more than anyone expected. It comes from Memento Mori, a short story by Christopher Nolan's brother Jonathan, who wrote it while the film was being made. The story was published afterwards and differs substantially; it is worth reading only after. Some DVD releases included a hidden option to watch the film in chronological order. It is much less interesting that way, which is the best argument for the structure. It cost about nine million dollars and was Nolan's second film.
