On the data. One film, and France did not see it for eighteen years. The usual phrasing is that it was banned in France. What happened is more awkward: the French government applied pressure, the distributor withdrew it rather than face the fight, and it was not shown in French cinemas until 1975. It was also withheld in Switzerland and on American military bases in Europe. The executions it depicts are based on real cases. Humphrey Cobb's 1935 novel drew on documented French courts martial, and men were shot for cowardice on both sides during that war. Kirk Douglas took the lead and, as producer, is a large part of why it was made at all. He and Kubrick worked together again on Spartacus three years later, less happily. The young German woman who sings in the final scene is Christiane Harlan. She married Stanley Kubrick the following year and they stayed married until his death in 1999. It is her only appearance in one of his films. It was Kubrick's fourth film and he was twenty-eight.
