Raya and the Last Dragon

On the data. A single film with an unusual release and one ongoing discussion around it. The release: it came out in March 2021, during the pandemic, in cinemas and on Disney+ at the same time for an additional thirty dollar fee. That arrangement was used for only a handful of films and it makes the box office figures for this one hard to compare to anything. The discussion: the world of the film is built from several Southeast Asian cultures at once rather than from one. Disney ran a story trust with consultants from the region and the production team included Southeast Asian writers. Responses from people in those countries have been mixed ever since, ranging from pleased at being represented at all to frustrated that the result is a blend nobody can point to as their own. It is a real conversation rather than a manufactured one and it is easy to find if you want it. The voice casting drew notice too: Kelly Marie Tran took over the lead role fairly late in production, replacing an earlier actress. There is no sequel and nothing has been announced. Merida aside, this is among the shortest entries on the site, and that is the honest state of it rather than an omission.
