Broadcast order: I through VIII, then Back to Earth, then X, XI, XII, then The Promised Land. Three things will otherwise catch you out, and the first one catches almost everybody.

Thirty-six episodes and the run the show is famous for. Series III opens with a text crawl that quietly resolves the end of series II, so do not skip past it.
Sixteen episodes and a different programme in places. Rimmer leaves early in VII, Kochanski joins, the laughter is added in post, and VIII ends on a cliffhanger.
Ten years later, set nine years later, and it does not resolve the series VIII cliffhanger. It ignores it and writes Kochanski out in a line. Knowing that in advance saves a lot of annoyance.
Eighteen episodes on Dave with the original four back. There is no series IX and there never was.
A ninety minute feature from 2020, and so far the last thing made.
Then what? The two American pilots have never aired and exist as disc extras. Skipping series VII and VIII and going straight from VI to Back to Earth is a defensible route, given that Back to Earth ignores series VIII anyway.
