Where to start with Sholay

One film, but the version matters more here than on almost any other page. The cut India saw in 1975 is not the cut Ramesh Sippy made. The censors required a changed ending and cut two scenes, and that shortened version is the one that played for decades. A restoration finished for the fiftieth anniversary puts the original ending and the missing scenes back. If you have a choice, watch that one.

    Sholay (1975) Sholay

Two small-time criminals are hired by a retired policeman to catch the bandit who destroyed his family. Three and a half hours, and it absorbed the Western, the Kurosawa film and the Hindi masala picture into one thing that had not existed before.

Then what? Nothing follows it in the sense of a sequel. What does exist is a long tail of other people's films: a 1988 spin-off built around one supporting character, a 1991 spoof with the original villain playing himself, a 2007 remake that failed badly, and a 2014 animated series. None of them is required and none of them is on this page.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
