The Hateful Eight

On the data. One film, three versions, and that is the useful thing to know about it. The roadshow cut runs about three hours and seven minutes, has an overture and an intermission, and was shown on 70mm film in a small number of cinemas that Tarantino had projectors shipped to and projectionists trained for. The general release is around two hours and forty-eight minutes and is cut differently in places, not simply shortened. In 2019 Netflix released an extended version split into four episodes, which restores some material the roadshow cut does not have and rearranges the order. All three are real and the roadshow one is the one he intended. It was shot in Ultra Panavision 70, an extremely wide format that had not been used on a feature since Khartoum in 1966. Panavision had to find and rebuild the lenses. The joke, which Tarantino made himself, is that he used the widest format ever made to film eight people arguing in one room. Ennio Morricone wrote the score, his first western in decades, and won the Academy Award for it. He had received an honorary Oscar in 2007; this was his first competitive win, at eighty-seven. Parts of the score are reworked from music he wrote for The Thing in 1982 and that John Carpenter did not use. The script leaked before production. Tarantino was angry enough to announce publicly that he was cancelling the film, then staged a live read of it in Los Angeles, then made it anyway. It is his most divisive film, and the division is usually about the same thing: the length of time it spends on the violence done to Jennifer Jason Leigh's character, who is in handcuffs for most of it. People who defend the film say the point is that everyone in the room is monstrous. People who do not say the film enjoys it. Both readings are available in the film itself.
