The Sword in the Stone

On the data. One film, and it is the quietest of the 1960s Disney features. T. H. White wrote The Sword in the Stone in 1938 as a standalone novel about Arthur's childhood, with Merlin living backwards through time and teaching the boy by turning him into animals. Twenty years later White revised it heavily and folded it into The Once and Future King, cutting some of the best comic material, including Madam Mim. Disney bought the earlier version, which is why the film has her and the modern omnibus does not. The film is unusual in having essentially no plot. Arthur, called Wart, is turned into a fish, a squirrel and a bird, and each lesson is its own short film. The squirrel section is the one that catches people out: a girl squirrel falls in love with him, and when he turns back the film stays on her face rather than cutting away. It is a surprisingly sad thirty seconds in a comedy. It did reasonable business and has always sat in the shadow of the films on either side of it. The animation reuses the sketchy Xerox look from One Hundred and One Dalmatians, which was cheap and which Walt Disney never warmed to. Wart is voiced by three different boys across the film, because the first one's voice broke during production and the studio kept recasting. Disney announced a live-action remake in 2015, with Bryan Cogman writing. Nothing has been released and nothing has been dated, so there is no upcoming title carried here.
