The Thin Man

One novel and six films, and the thin man of the title is not the detective.

Where to start with The Thin Man

The six films in release order. They run in real time, the couple's son is born partway through and grows up, so the order is not optional.

  1. 1
The Thin Man (1934) The Thin Man

Shot in about two weeks as a programme filler and it became one of the most imitated films of the decade. Nothing needs to come first.

  2. 2
After the Thin Man (1936) After the Thin Man

From an original story Hammett wrote for the screen rather than a novel. This is where the series settles into what it is.

  3. 3
Another Thin Man (1939) Another Thin Man

The last one Hammett touched, and the one that gives Nick and Nora a son. He ages across the three films after it, so watching out of order gets visibly odd.

Then what? Shadow of the Thin Man, The Thin Man Goes Home and Song of the Thin Man finish the run in that order, with no Hammett involvement and a widely agreed decline. The 1957 television series with Peter Lawford is a separate continuity, seventy two episodes, and the 1975 television film is its own thing again. The novel is worth reading and only the first film comes from it.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
