On the data. One film, and it holds a record nothing else does. It won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Golden Bear at Berlin in the same year. No other film has taken both. Its American release was cut substantially, removing material critical of the American oil company that employs the men, and it was presented as shorter and less political. The full version circulated again much later. William Friedkin remade it in 1977 as Sorcerer, immediately after The Exorcist. It opened against Star Wars, failed completely, and is now regarded as one of the best American films of the decade. A Netflix remake appeared in 2024 and is not well regarded. The first hour has almost no plot and is often cut by people describing the film. It is what makes the second hour work, because by then you know exactly what each man has to lose.
