The Wind Rises

On the data. One film, and it caused an argument in Japan that it is still having. It is about Jiro Horikoshi, who designed the Mitsubishi A6M Zero. The film treats him as a man who wanted to build something beautiful and whose work was taken and used for a war he did not choose. Nationalists in Japan attacked it for being anti-war and for Miyazaki's public criticism of the government; others attacked it for being too gentle with a man whose aircraft killed a great many people. Miyazaki has said the contradiction is the point and that he does not resolve it. Miyazaki announced his retirement when it came out, at seventy-two. It was not the first time he had said so and it was not the last word: he returned with The Boy and the Heron ten years later. The sound is unusual. Many of the aircraft and earthquake noises were made by human voices rather than by recordings, which is noticeable once you know. The title comes from a line of Paul Valery that the film quotes directly.
