Where to start with The Adventures of Tintin

Read the albums, but not in publication order. The first two are the reason people give up.

  1. 1
Start at The Blue Lotus or The Crab with the Golden Claws The Adventures of Tintin (albums)

The first two albums, Tintin in the Land of the Soviets and Tintin in the Congo, are crude, badly drawn and in the Congo's case openly racist. Hergé himself disowned the first and regretted the second. Starting there gives a completely false impression of what the books are.

  2. 2
Then read forward in order The Adventures of Tintin (albums)

From The Blue Lotus onward the drawing, the plotting and the research all improve sharply, and later books refer back to earlier ones. The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure are a two parter, as are Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon.

  3. 3
The 1991 animated series The Adventures of Tintin

Thirty nine episodes and the closest thing to the books on screen. Most albums get two episodes. If you would rather watch than read, watch this.

Then what? Spielberg's 2011 film blends three albums into one story, so it is not a straight adaptation of any of them. The 1950s and 60s versions are curiosities. The unfinished final album, Tintin and Alph-Art, is published as Hergé left it: sketches and notes, with no ending.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
