On the data. Two errors turn up on nearly every watch order page for this franchise. The first is treating the 2018 film as a sequel to the Jolie films; it is a hard reboot with no shared cast, characters or events. The second is treating the Netflix animated series as a sequel to the 2018 film. It is not, even though both draw on the same 2013 game. The film adapts that first game; the series picks up after the third one, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and continues the games rather than any film. The proof is in the cast and characters: Earl Baylon returns as Jonah Maiava with the same voice actor as the games, and Sam Nishimura, Zip and Roth all carry over from game canon, with Lara's arc explicitly about processing the ending of Shadow. Showrunner Tasha Huo described the show as the connective tissue between the origin story Lara of the reboot games and the classic 1996 era Lara, which makes it simultaneously a sequel to the reboot trilogy and a prequel to the original game. That sits inside Crystal Dynamics' unified timeline effort, first stated publicly in 2021, which folds the classic and reboot games into one canon; as of December 2025 the official chronology runs the reboot trilogy, then this series, then the original 1996 game. The series title nods at Tomb Raider: Legend from 2006 but does not adapt it. Both seasons are eight episodes, verified from three sources each, and both dropped complete on a single day, 10 October 2024 and 11 December 2025. There is no third season and none was ever ordered: Netflix confirmed in September 2025 that the second was the final one, and a two season structure had been reported as far back as 2021, so this is closer to concluded as ordered than cancelled. On the unreleased projects, and the distinctions matter. The Vikander sequel is definitively dead, and for a structural reason rather than a creative one. It was developed as Tomb Raider: Obsidian, with Amy Jump writing and Ben Wheatley directing from 2019, then Misha Green replacing both in January 2021 and delivering a draft by May. In July 2022 MGM's option window expired without a greenlight, MGM lost the film rights, and Vikander departed. Any claim that she is returning is false. The Amazon Prime Video series is real and shooting: greenlit in 2024, created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge with Chad Hodge as co-showrunner, starring Sophie Turner as Lara Croft alongside Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Celia Imrie and Paterson Joseph, with production starting in January 2026 and a brief pause in March after Turner sustained a minor injury. No release date, release window or episode count has ever been announced, so it is left off rather than dated by guesswork. A report in April 2025 that the project was dead was never confirmed and has been overtaken by casting and cameras rolling. A separate Amazon feature film was announced in the same January 2023 rights package, intended to interconnect with the series and the games, and has had no director, writer, cast or date since; it is in development and nothing stronger. On ownership, the property sits with Crystal Dynamics, which passed from Eidos to Square Enix to Embracer Group in August 2022, and in May 2026 Embracer announced that Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider rights will move to a new company, Fellowship Entertainment, in a spin-off scheduled for 2027 and not yet complete. The six 2007 web shorts were made for GameTap, then a Turner service, and are effectively orphaned with no current official home.
