Where to start with Upstairs, Downstairs

Series one to five in order, then the 2010 revival. Thomas and Sarah sits inside the original's run rather than after it, so it can go almost anywhere, including nowhere. The revival genuinely continues the original, and it is the one place here where order matters.

  1. 1
Series one to five, 1971 to 1975 Upstairs, Downstairs

Sixty-eight hours, 1903 to 1930, one house. Six of the first series were made in black and white during the ITV colour strike and five went out that way. If a set offers you a shorter first series, you are looking at the American structure, which merged the first two British series into a single thirteen and left thirteen episodes out.

  2. 2
Thomas and Sarah, any time after series four Thomas and Sarah

Thirteen episodes following the chauffeur and the maid after they leave. It runs beside the original rather than after it, so it spoils nothing and needs nothing, and it stops in the middle of its story because a strike ended it.

  3. 3
The 2010 revival, both series Upstairs Downstairs

Three then six, and it is a continuation: Rose Buck comes back to the same house in 1936 and is the only living thread between the two shows. The Bellamys are referred to and never shown, so you lose little by not remembering them in detail and you gain the entire point of the thing by having met them.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
