Whisper of the Heart

On the data. One film, and its director made no others. Yoshifumi Kondo was the studio's key animator on Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday and Porco Rosso, and was openly spoken of as the person who would take over from Miyazaki and Takahata. This is the only film he directed. He died of an aortic dissection in January 1998, at forty-seven. His death is often connected to the hours worked at the studio, and Miyazaki announced a retirement shortly afterwards that did not last. Miyazaki wrote the screenplay and storyboarded it, which is why it feels like his film even though it is not. The Country Roads song is in it twice, in English and in a Japanese translation written by Miyazaki's co-worker, and it runs through the whole film. The Cat Returns, seven years later, takes the Baron out of this film's one fantasy sequence and gives him his own. They are not a series.
