On the data. The interesting mess here is the lead changing twice. Vin Diesel left after the first film. Rather than recast, the second film kills his character off in dialogue before it starts and recruits a new agent played by Ice Cube. It did badly. Twelve years later the third film brings Vin Diesel back and dismisses that death in a single throwaway line. So the second film is not only skippable, it is actively undone. The third film is also a good example of where blockbuster money comes from now. It did modest business in the United States and a great deal in China, India and elsewhere, which is why a fourth has been announced more than once despite the American numbers. The first film was positioned explicitly as an answer to James Bond, at a moment when the Bond films themselves were at a low point, and it worked. The irony is that Casino Royale came out four years later and did the same job better. A fourth film has been announced repeatedly since 2017. Nothing is dated.
