Akira

One film and six volumes of manga, and the film ends in a place the manga is only halfway to.

Where to start with Akira

The film first, then the manga, and go in knowing they are not the same story. Katsuhiro Otomo made the film in 1988 while he was still drawing the manga, which did not finish until 1990. So the film compresses the early chapters, rebuilds the second half from scratch and ends somewhere the manga has not reached yet. Neither one spoils the other, because after a certain point they stop telling the same story at all.

  1. 1
    Akira (1988) Akira

A hundred and twenty four minutes, directed by Otomo himself. A biker gang in Neo-Tokyo, a friend who develops powers he cannot hold, and animation nobody had seen before.

  2. 2
The manga (1982 to 1990) Akira

Six volumes, a hundred and twenty chapters, over two thousand pages. Everything the film condensed is here at full length, and the back half is a different story entirely: Neo-Tokyo is destroyed around the midpoint and the rest is what people do in the ruins.

Then what? Nothing else. A live-action version has been in development since 2002 without being made. Warner Bros. held the rights until June 2025, with Taika Waititi attached at one point, and then let them go. There is no film to wait for.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
