Ghost in the Shell

On the data. This is the clearest case on the site of a franchise where release order actively misleads. There are four bodies of animation and they are not chapters of one story. First, Mamoru Oshii's films: Ghost in the Shell in 1995, set in 2029, and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence in 2004, which follows it and nothing else. Ghost in the Shell 2.0, released in 2008, is the 1995 film reissued with several sequences replaced by computer animation, a recoloured palette and a re-recorded Japanese track, so it is the same story rather than another one; the original 1995 cut is the one to watch and 2.0 is listed only so you can tell them apart. Second, Kenji Kamiyama's television continuity: Stand Alone Complex, twenty-six episodes from October 2002 to October 2003, set in 2030, then S.A.C. 2nd GIG, twenty-six episodes from January 2004 to January 2005, set in 2032, then the 2006 television film Solid State Society, set in 2034. The Laughing Man in 2005 and Individual Eleven in 2006 are feature length recaps of the two seasons with a little new animation and some changed emphasis; they replace roughly twenty-six episodes each with two hours and lose most of the standalone episodes that give the series its shape. Third, Arise, which restarts everything: four OVAs released between June 2013 and September 2014 as border:1 Ghost Pain, border:2 Ghost Whispers, border:3 Ghost Tears and border:4 Ghost Stands Alone, set before Section 9 exists, with different character designs and a different voice cast. Alternative Architecture, which began airing in April 2015, is those four OVAs recut into eight television episodes with two new ones added; the two new ones were also sold separately as border:5 Pyrophoric Cult, so buying both means paying twice for the same fifty minutes. Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie, later in 2015, continues the Arise story and nothing else. Fourth, SAC_2045, twelve episodes on Netflix in April 2020 and twelve more in May 2022. Its placement is worth stating carefully because it is often described as a fourth separate continuity: it looks nothing like Stand Alone Complex, being fully computer animated with a different studio arrangement, but it is written as part of the Kamiyama timeline and is set in 2045, eleven years after Solid State Society. This site therefore gives it a story order position inside the Stand Alone Complex thread while keeping it in its own release section, because the visual break is real even though the continuity break is not. Sustainable War in 2021 and The Last Human in 2023 are theatrical recuts of its two seasons and add nothing. On top of all that, the 2017 Paramount live action film is its own thing again, borrowing images from the 1995 film and beats from Stand Alone Complex without continuing either, and The Ghost in the Shell, a Science SARU series directed by Mokochan, began weekly on Prime Video and Japanese broadcast on 7 July 2026 and returns to Masamune Shirow's 1989 to 1991 manga as its source. That last one is flagged unconfirmed because its episode count has not been announced; press coverage expects ten, which is why an announced figure and a reported figure are not the same thing and only the announced one belongs in a count here. Two further items are deliberately left out: Solid State Society 3D, a 2011 stereoscopic reissue of the 2006 film, and the various Shirow manga volumes, which are the source for all of the above rather than a step in any of them. On the question of where a newcomer should start, the honest answer is that no single title leads into all the others, so the choice is between the shortest complete statement of the idea, which is the 1995 film, and the longest and most developed version of it, which is Stand Alone Complex. Starting at the beginning of the release list and working forward gets you the 1995 film, then a 2002 series that ignores it, then a 2004 sequel to the 1995 film that ignores the series, and that alternation continues for another decade.
