American Horror Story

An anthology where the seasons look standalone, mostly are, and then one of them turns out to be a crossover of three earlier ones.

Where to start with American Horror Story

There is no required order. Every season has a new cast, a new setting and its own ending, and you can start at any of them without being lost. There is still a better order than shuffling, because one season is a crossover that pays off three earlier ones, and the path below is the shortest route to that payoff.

  1. 1
Season 1, Murder House American Horror Story

Twelve episodes, the shortest way into the show's habits, and the one season the crossover genuinely needs you to have seen. A character born at the end of it is the villain of season eight.

  2. 2
Season 2, Asylum American Horror Story

The best reviewed season and the one most people would put first on quality. It also establishes Briarcliff Manor, which Freak Show, Roanoke and 1984 all reach back to later.

  3. 3
Season 3, Coven American Horror Story

The witches, in New Orleans. Its cast carries most of season eight, so skipping it means watching the crossover with strangers rather than with people you know.

  4. 4
Season 5, Hotel American Horror Story

The third of the seasons the crossover draws on. A character from Coven dies inside its hotel, and season eight starts by going in to collect her.

  5. 5
Season 8, Apocalypse American Horror Story

The crossover: Murder House, Coven and Hotel in one story, with its sixth episode returning to the house from season one with the original cast. It is the only season with prerequisites.

Then what? Fill in the rest in any order you like: Freak Show, Roanoke, Cult, 1984, Double Feature, NYC and Delicate all stand on their own, and the links between them are nods rather than requirements. Freak Show is the one to take next if you want the nods to land, because it explains a character who was already in Asylum. American Horror Stories is the spin-off of single, unconnected episodes: worth it after Murder House and Coven, since three of its episodes revisit them. Season thirteen, titled 13, has been announced for 24 September 2026.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below — tick anything off in either place.

This reads the progress stored inside the picture, so nothing has to be retyped. If the image has been through a messaging app it may have been re-encoded and lost that — scan the code on it instead, or copy the code printed along the bottom.

Restoring replaces the progress currently saved on this device for the franchise the code belongs to.
