Where to start with Avatar: The Last Airbender

One animated series, a sequel set seventy years later, a film that continues it, and two live-action versions of the same story. The animated line is the one to watch; the live-action ones are remakes rather than continuations and neither is well regarded.

  1. 1
Avatar: The Last Airbender, series 1 Avatar: The Last Airbender

Twenty episodes, made for children and written well enough that this has stopped being a caveat. Nothing before it, and the first series is much the weakest of the three. It is worth reaching the second before deciding.

  2. 2
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender (2026) Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender

An animated film continuing the original series with much of the original crew, set in the years after it ends. It assumes you have watched all three series and gives away their ending, so it goes after them.

  3. 3
The Legend of Korra, series 1 The Legend of Korra

Set seventy years later with a new Avatar and a deliberately older audience in mind. Divisive among people who loved the first, and it needs it: the world has moved on in ways that only land if you saw what it moved on from.

Then what? The two live-action versions are retellings of the original series rather than additions to it: the 2010 film is one of the worst reviewed adaptations of anything, and the 2024 Netflix series is a straighter remake of the first twenty episodes. Avatar: Seven Havens is the next animated series and has not arrived yet.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Sync & backup

Your progress is saved on this device automatically. The code below takes a copy out and puts it back. Moving a whole list onto a device that has nothing on it yet is part of the subscription.

The code holds only this franchise. The link opens the tracker with your progress already filled in, good for showing someone where you're at. The image is a picture you can keep anywhere: scan the code on it with a phone, or drag the file back in below.

Every franchise you have touched, in one code.

Scan it with another device's camera, or paste the code in below. It never leaves your browser.

Drag a SagaList image here, or .

This reads the progress stored inside the picture, so nothing has to be retyped. If the image has been through a messaging app it may have been re-encoded and lost that: scan the code on it instead, or copy the code printed along the bottom.

Takes either kind of code. A single franchise code replaces that franchise, on any device. An everything code merges by default, so nothing you have ticked on this device is lost. Putting a whole list onto a device that has nothing on it yet is the part an account pays for.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.
