Batman (Burton and Schumacher)

Four films, two directors, three Batmen, and the tone falls off a cliff halfway through.

Where to start with Batman (Burton and Schumacher)

Release order, and treat it as two pairs rather than four of a kind. Burton made the first two and Schumacher made the second two, and almost nothing except the city carries across that join.

  1. 1
    Batman (1989) Batman

The one that proved a comic book film could be taken seriously, and set the look everything after it argued with.

  2. 2
    Batman Returns (1992) Batman Returns

Burton given a free hand. Stranger, colder and more his own film than the first. If you only want the Burton ones, stop here.

  3. 3
    Batman Forever (1995) Batman Forever

A hard change of tone and a different Batman. Watchable on its own terms if you do not expect the first two.

  4. 4
    Batman & Robin (1997) Batman & Robin

Famous for being bad. Worth it only if you want to see why the whole thing stopped for eight years.

Then what? Nothing follows on. Warner Bros. shelved the series after 1997 and started again from nothing with Batman Begins in 2005, which shares no cast, no continuity and no director with any of these.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
