It became the highest grossing film of 1959 and saved the company. It won eleven Academy Awards, which has been equalled twice and never beaten. The chariot race took about five weeks to film on an eighteen-acre set at Cinecitta in Rome. The persistent story that a stuntman died during it is false; a stuntman was injured, and the horse-related death stories attach to the 1925 version, during which a stuntman did die. It is the third film of Lew Wallace's 1880 novel, after a short in 1907 and a large silent version in 1925. A further remake came in 2016 and failed badly. Gore Vidal worked on the script uncredited and claimed afterwards to have written a subtext between the two male leads that he said William Wyler agreed to and Charlton Heston was never told about. Heston denied it for the rest of his life.
