On the data. Two things. The first three books are one story. The manuscript was too long to publish as a single volume and was cut into three, which is why the first two end abruptly. Going in expecting three self contained novels leads to disappointment; going in treating them as one book in three parts does not. The audiobooks matter unusually here. Ray Porter narrates them and a very large proportion of the audience has only ever heard them rather than read them. The books are largely one man talking to copies of himself, which is a format that suits narration. The fourth book is the divisive one. Heaven's River is nearly as long as the first three combined and spends most of its time on a single investigation, which readers who came for the breadth of the earlier books often find frustrating. Dennis E. Taylor has said more books are planned. Nothing is dated.
