Where to start with Bosch

Three titles, one continuous story, straight through in order. The order is easy. What is genuinely useful here is the relationship to the novels, because the seasons do not adapt them one to one or in publication order.

  1. 1
    Bosch, season 1 Bosch

Ten episodes built mostly from City of Bones, which is the eighth novel rather than the first. Nothing before it, and the show never assumes you have read anything.

  2. 2
Bosch: Legacy, season 1 Bosch: Legacy

A direct continuation with the same actor, picking up after he leaves the police. It is not a reboot, and it assumes you know why he resigned, which is the whole of the seventh season's ending.

  3. 3
    Ballard, season 1 Ballard

Ten episodes following a character introduced in the Legacy finale, with Bosch himself appearing. Finishing Legacy first is a real prerequisite rather than a preference.

Then what? That is a hundred and eight episodes in release order. Ballard has been renewed and filmed but has no announced date. A prequel called Bosch: Start of Watch is coming to MGM+ with a young Bosch in 1991 Los Angeles; when it arrives, watch it last regardless of its setting, because it is built for people who already know the character.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below — tick anything off in either place.

Sync & backup

Your progress is saved on this device automatically. To carry it to another device, move the code below.

The code holds only this franchise. The link opens the tracker with your progress already filled in — good for showing someone where you're at. The image is a picture you can keep anywhere: scan the code on it with a phone, or drag the file back in below.

Drag a SagaList image here, or .

This reads the progress stored inside the picture, so nothing has to be retyped. If the image has been through a messaging app it may have been re-encoded and lost that — scan the code on it instead, or copy the code printed along the bottom.

Restoring replaces the progress currently saved on this device for the franchise the code belongs to.
