Brother Bear

On the data. Two films, and the first is an ending in more ways than one. Disney had a second animation studio in Florida, inside what was then Disney-MGM Studios, where visitors could watch animators working through a window. It opened in 1989 and made parts of Beauty and the Beast, Mulan and Lilo and Stitch. Brother Bear was the last feature it produced. The studio closed in January 2004, a few months after the film came out, as Disney shut down traditional animation across the company. The film itself has one formal idea worth seeing. It opens in the standard widescreen ratio and then, at the point where the main character is transformed, the image widens to the full CinemaScope frame and the colour palette changes completely. It is the kind of trick that only works in a cinema or on a screen that respects the change, and a lot of streaming copies handle it badly. Phil Collins wrote the songs, four years after Tarzan, and the film was nominated for the Academy Award for animated feature. It lost to Finding Nemo, which is not a close contest. It also drew criticism over how it uses Inuit and other Indigenous North American material, which it treats as general mythology rather than as anything specific, and over the casting. That argument was made at the time rather than only in hindsight. Brother Bear 2 arrived in 2006 from the direct-to-video unit, with most of the leading voices recast. It is a straightforward follow-up with no connection to anything beyond the first film.
