Bambi

On the data. Three things, and the novel is the surprise. Felix Salten published Bambi: Eine Lebensgeschichte aus dem Walde in Vienna in 1923. It was written for adults, it is far more brutal than the film, and it reads as a book about being hunted rather than a book about a deer. In 1936 the Nazi regime banned it and burned copies, treating it as an allegory about the position of Jews in Europe. Salten, who was Jewish, fled to Switzerland in 1938. Disney bought the rights through an intermediary in 1937 for one thousand dollars. The 1942 film took five years, which is longer than Snow White, because the animators were being taught to draw real deer from live animals kept on the lot. It has roughly a thousand words of dialogue in sixty-nine minutes. Like Pinocchio, Fantasia and Dumbo before it, it lost money on first release and did not recover until a reissue after the war. And then there is the scene. Bambi's mother is shot off screen, the film does not linger, and it does not explain. It has been the standard example of a children's film that does not flinch for eighty years, and it is the reason a lot of people remember exactly where they were when they first saw it. Bambi II is the only sequel, and it sits inside the original rather than after it. It went to cinemas in most of the world and straight to video in America, which is why its release year is sometimes given as 2005. The novel entered the American public domain in 2022, which is why a low-budget horror film called Bambi: The Reckoning exists. It has nothing to do with any of this and is not on the list.
