Where to start with City Hunter

The anime is one long continuity and you can walk straight through it. The live action versions are five separate things and none of them connects to it.

  1. 1
    City Hunter (1987) City Hunter

A hundred and forty episodes across four titled runs, and they are one series rather than four. It is where the character actually lives.

  2. 2
City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes (2019) City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes

The revival, twenty years after the series ended, with most of the original voice cast back and the same continuity intact. It is also the easiest entry point if a hundred and forty episodes is too much.

  3. 3
    City Hunter (2024) City Hunter

The Netflix live action film, and the best of the live action attempts. It stands entirely alone, so it needs nothing before it.

Then what? Three theatrical films from 1989 and 1990 and three television films from the late nineties all sit inside the anime continuity, and Angel Dust in 2023 follows on from Shinjuku Private Eyes. On the live action side there is also a Jackie Chan parody from 1993, a French film from 2019 and a Chinese series from 2014. Angel Heart, in both manga and anime, uses the same characters in a separate world and is explicitly not a sequel.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
