Das Boot

One 1981 film that exists in four different lengths, and a 2018 series that is not a remake of it.

Where to start with Das Boot

Get the right version of the film first. That is the whole decision here.

  1. 1
The 1985 television version Das Boot (1985 television version)

Six parts, about five hours. This is the full cut and it is the one to watch if you can find it. The extra time is spent on boredom and waiting, which is the point of the story.

  2. 2
    The Director's Cut Das Boot

About three and a half hours, released in 1997. The best compromise if five hours is too much. Avoid the original one hundred and forty nine minute theatrical cut, which loses a great deal.

  3. 3
    The 2018 series Das Boot

Thirty two episodes over four seasons, set a year after the film with a different crew. Watch it as its own thing rather than as a continuation.

Then what? Buchheim's novel is the source and he disliked the film intensely. There is a sequel novel, Die Festung, which has never been adapted.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
