Dinosaur

On the data. One film, and its interest is in how it was made and in what it nearly was. The backgrounds are photographs. The crew shot landscapes in Venezuela, Hawaii, Jordan, California and Australia, and the animals were built in a computer and composited into them. In 2000 that combination at feature length was new, and it is why the film still looks unlike anything else from its period: the rock and the water are real, and the creatures standing on them are not. It was also nearly a silent film. The plan, carried for years, was that the dinosaurs would not speak at all, and the opening sequence that survives in the finished film, several minutes with no dialogue, is what that version would have been like. Disney's management lost its nerve and dialogue was added throughout. Almost every account of the production treats that as the decision that cost the film its identity. It cost somewhere around a hundred and twenty-eight million dollars, which made it the most expensive animated film the studio had made to that point, and it took about three hundred and fifty million worldwide, so it was not a failure. It was made by a Disney division called The Secret Lab, built out of the company's visual effects house. The division closed in 2001. Disney spent years leaving it off the official list of its animated features and then quietly added it, which is why older reference lists disagree about whether it counts.
