Dirty Harry

Five films, each a self-contained case, and none of them states a year.

Where to start with Dirty Harry

Release order, though this is one of the few franchises where it genuinely does not matter much. Each film is a separate case with its own villain, and nothing carries over but the man and his city.

  1. 1
    Dirty Harry (1971) Dirty Harry

A sniper calling himself Scorpio, a police inspector who does not care for procedure, and the film that named a subgenre. Nothing precedes it.

  2. 2
    Magnum Force (1973) Magnum Force

The direct response to the first film's politics, with Harry against a death squad of young officers. Written in part as an answer to critics who called the original fascist.

  3. 3
    Sudden Impact (1983) Sudden Impact

The best of the later ones and the only one Eastwood directed himself. If you are only watching three, this is the third.

Then what? The Enforcer from 1976 and The Dead Pool from 1988 fill in the other two. There is no sixth film. Eastwood was fifty eight by the last one and retired the part deliberately, saying his age would turn Harry into a parody.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
