Where to start with Dr. Mabuse

Watch the two Fritz Lang films from the twenties and thirties. Everything after them is a different kind of thing entirely, and one of them has the same title as one of these.

  1. 1
Dr. Mabuse the Gambler (1922) Dr. Mabuse the Gambler

Four and a half hours of Weimar Berlin run by a hypnotist. It was released as two separate features a month apart in 1922, so depending on the edition you may be watching one film or two.

  2. 2
The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933) The Testament of Dr. Mabuse

The best of them, and banned in Germany for twenty eight years. Make sure you have the 1933 Lang film and not the 1962 remake, which carries exactly the same title.

  3. 3
The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse (1960) The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse

Lang's last film, twenty seven years on. It sits in two places at once: the end of his run and the start of the 1960s German series, because the same studio carried on without him.

Then what? Five more films followed from the same studio between 1961 and 1964, with Mabuse as a recurring mastermind rather than a continuing story. They share a villain and a police inspector rather than a plot, so they can be watched in any order. One of them, from 1962, is a straight remake of the 1933 film under the identical title. After that, a Jess Franco film in 1972 and a Claude Chabrol film in 1990 each start again from the novel.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
