There is no single thread here, there are five, and the mistake is trying to watch them in one line. The original 2005 series is the root and is worth watching first because everything borrows its vocabulary. But if you want one story that runs unbroken to this year, start with The One Who Shines in the Darkness instead: it shares the world and none of the cast, and it goes all the way through to 2026 without ever needing the Saejima family. The anime is a third door again and requires no live action at all.
