Gurren Lagann

Twenty seven episodes, and the two films are the same story again rather than more of it.

Where to start with Gurren Lagann

The series, all twenty seven episodes, and then stop unless you want it again. The two films are compilations: they retell the series you have just watched with some new animation added, not a continuation of it. People pick them up expecting a sequel, find themselves watching the first fifteen episodes compressed, and give up on the whole thing. They are worth seeing, but as a second pass rather than a next step.

  1. 1
The series (2007) Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Twenty seven episodes from Gainax, directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi. A boy who digs tunnels finds a face in the ground, and the show escalates from there for six months without ever stopping.

  2. 2
Childhood's End (2008) Gurren Lagann the Movie: Childhood's End

Only afterwards. Episodes one to fifteen cut down into a film with about twenty minutes of new animation.

  3. 3
The Lights in the Sky Are Stars (2009) Gurren Lagann the Movie: The Lights in the Sky Are Stars

The second half the same way, and with noticeably more new material than the first film.

Then what? The manga ran alongside the series from 2007 to 2013 and reaches ten volumes. It follows the same story with some events reordered and extra backstory. There are also several spin-off manga set in alternate versions, which are jokes rather than continuations, and four light novels.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
