Harry Hole

Thirteen novels that must be read in order, and English translations that came out in almost the wrong order entirely.

Where to start with Harry Hole

Read them in Norwegian publication order, which is the list on this page. Do not use English publication dates: they are badly scrambled and will start you in the middle.

  1. 1
    The Bat (1997) The Bat

The first book. Most English readers never started here, because it was not translated until 2012, by which point ten later books were already out in English.

  2. 2
    The Redbreast (2000) The Redbreast

Skip to here if you want the series at full strength. The first two are set abroad and stand slightly apart, and this is where the Oslo cast and the long running threads begin. Plenty of people start here on purpose.

  3. 3
Jo Nesbo's Detective Hole (2026) Jo Nesbo's Detective Hole

The screen version worth your time. Nine episodes on Netflix, and it adapts the fifth book rather than the first, so expect it to start mid story.

Then what? The Snowman from 2017 is the only feature film and it is the one to be careful with. It adapts the seventh book, leans on relationships built across six earlier novels, and a chunk of its script was never shot. The two screen versions are unrelated to each other.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
