Where to start with Hellboy

Not one order but three, because these six films are three unconnected attempts at the same character. Start with the del Toro pair, which is the only run where one film follows another.

  1. 1
    Hellboy (2004) Hellboy

Opens in Scotland in October 1944 with the Nazis opening a portal, then jumps sixty years. Ron Perlman, Guillermo del Toro, and the version most people mean when they say Hellboy.

  2. 2
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) Hellboy II: The Golden Army

A direct sequel with the same cast and the same world. A third was planned and never made, so the story simply stops here.

  3. 3
    Hellboy (2019) Hellboy

A complete restart with David Harbour. Nothing carries over and nothing is required first. Its sequel was cancelled.

Then what? The two animated films, Sword of Storms and Blood and Iron in that order, use the same voices as the del Toro films and were blessed by Mignola and del Toro, but they are not formally in that continuity. They sit alongside the live action pair rather than between them, and they are best watched after both. Hellboy: The Crooked Man from 2024 is a third start, set in 1959 with another new cast, and needs nothing before it.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
