Where to start with Jack Ryan

There is no single Jack Ryan story. There are four, sharing a name and nothing else, with five actors in the part. Pick a continuity rather than trying to watch them all in a line.

  1. 1
The Hunt for Red October (1990) The Hunt for Red October

The best of them by most accounts, and the start of the only film block with real continuity. Nothing before it.

  2. 2
    Patriot Games (1992) Patriot Games

Harrison Ford replaces Alec Baldwin with no on-screen explanation, and the film simply carries on as though nothing happened. Its sequel follows it directly.

  3. 3
Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, season 1 Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan

A completely separate continuity on Prime Video with its own Ryan and its own Greer. It connects to none of the films, so it is a clean place to start if you want the newest version.

Then what? Clear and Present Danger finishes the first block. The Sum of All Fears and Shadow Recruit are each a reboot that stands entirely alone, so watch them singly or not at all. The series runs four seasons and then finishes in a film, Ghost War, released in May 2026, which is the fifth chapter of that continuity rather than a sixth film in any of the others.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below — tick anything off in either place.

Your progress is saved on this device automatically. To carry it to another device, move the code below.

The code holds only this franchise. The link opens the tracker with your progress already filled in — good for showing someone where you're at. The image is a picture you can keep anywhere: scan the code on it with a phone, or drag the file back in below.

Drag a SagaList image here, or .

This reads the progress stored inside the picture, so nothing has to be retyped. If the image has been through a messaging app it may have been re-encoded and lost that — scan the code on it instead, or copy the code printed along the bottom.

Restoring replaces the progress currently saved on this device for the franchise the code belongs to.
