Where to start with Midsomer Murders

Broadcast order, but almost every episode is a self-contained feature-length mystery, so dipping in costs you nothing in plot. What it costs you is the cast. The regulars change constantly and one of the changes is the lead.

  1. 1
The Killings at Badger's Drift, 1997 Midsomer Murders

The pilot, and the highest rated single drama of its year. It sets up Tom Barnaby and Gavin Troy, which is the pairing the first eighty-one episodes run on.

  2. 2
Series 2 to 12, in any order you like Midsomer Murders

Eighty-odd standalone mysteries. Sergeants rotate, pathologists change, and none of it needs to be watched in sequence.

  3. 3
Series 13, all eight Midsomer Murders

John Nettles's last, ending with Fit for Murder. Neil Dudgeon's John Barnaby is introduced during this series, before the handover, so skipping from 12 to 14 means meeting the new lead cold.

  4. 4
    Series 14 onwards Midsomer Murders

The second Barnaby, and the same show. Series 19 and 22 were each split across calendar years, so the 2018 episodes and the 2023 episodes are not separate series.

Then what? Series 25 exists and is on Acorn TV in North America. ITV has not shown it. Series 26 is commissioned with no date.

Sync & backup

Your progress is saved on this device automatically. The code below takes a copy out and puts it back. Moving a whole list onto a device that has nothing on it yet is part of the subscription.

The code holds only this franchise. The link opens the tracker with your progress already filled in, good for showing someone where you're at. The image is a picture you can keep anywhere: scan the code on it with a phone, or drag the file back in below.

Every franchise you have touched, in one code.

Scan it with another device's camera, or paste the code in below. It never leaves your browser.

Drag a SagaList image here, or .

This reads the progress stored inside the picture, so nothing has to be retyped. If the image has been through a messaging app it may have been re-encoded and lost that: scan the code on it instead, or copy the code printed along the bottom.

Takes either kind of code. A single franchise code replaces that franchise, on any device. An everything code merges by default, so nothing you have ticked on this device is lost. Putting a whole list onto a device that has nothing on it yet is the part an account pays for.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.
