Where to start with National Lampoon's Vacation

Release order, all five. The running joke is that the children change actors every time, so watching them in order is the only way it lands.

  1. 1
    National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) National Lampoon's Vacation

The original, and the template. John Hughes wrote it from his own short story about a family drive to a theme park that turns out to be shut.

  2. 2
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

Skip to here if you only want one more. It is the one people rewatch every year, it is the last one Hughes wrote, and it does not need the European film in between.

  3. 3
    Vacation (2015) Vacation

The handover. Ed Helms plays Rusty as an adult, dragging his own family on the same trip, with Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo now the grandparents. It makes the recasting joke explicit.

Then what? European Vacation from 1985 and Vegas Vacation from 1997 fill the gaps and neither is essential. Christmas Vacation 2, from 2003, is a television film about Cousin Eddie with neither Chevy Chase nor Beverly D'Angelo in it. Hotel Hell Vacation is a fourteen minute advert from 2010, not a film. And the wider National Lampoon direct to video catalogue has nothing to do with this family at all.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
