The Trinity test happens with about an hour still to run. It uses colour to mark point of view. The colour sections are Oppenheimer's subjective experience; the black and white sections are not his and belong to Lewis Strauss. Nolan has confirmed this and the film never states it. The Trinity explosion was achieved without computer imagery, using practical effects at small scale, which Nolan has said was partly a constraint he set himself. It was released on the same day as Barbie in July 2023 and the two became a joint event that neither studio engineered. Both took over a billion dollars. It won seven Academy Awards including best picture, best director, best actor for Cillian Murphy and best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr. It is adapted from American Prometheus, which took its authors twenty-five years and won the Pulitzer Prize.
