Where to start with Tom Ripley

Read the first novel, then pick a version. Almost every adaptation is of the same book.

  1. 1
The Talented Mr. Ripley The Ripley novels

The 1955 novel. Short, and much colder than any film of it.

  2. 2
    Ripley (2024) Ripley

The eight episode Netflix series. The most faithful adaptation and the one that comes closest to the book's temperature.

  3. 3
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) The Talented Mr. Ripley

Minghella's film. Warmer, more tragic, and it gives Ripley a conscience the book does not.

  4. 4
    Purple Noon Purple Noon

The 1960 French version with Alain Delon. It changes the ending in a way that inverts the point of the book, and it is still worth seeing.

Then what? Ripley's Game has been filmed twice, as The American Friend in 1977 and under its own name in 2002 with John Malkovich. Ripley Under Ground was filmed in 2005 and is hard to find. The other two novels have never been adapted.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
