On the data. The connection between the modern world and the Four Lands is the structural fact this page exists to explain, and it is also the thing reading order can spoil. The Four Lands are Earth long after a chemical and nuclear cataclysm called the Great Wars, and Genesis of Shannara places them in the modern Pacific Northwest, with real landmarks including the Columbia River identifiable. Word and Void, published 1997 to 1999, is contemporary supernatural fiction about the Word and the Void, Knights of the Word and demons, and on publication it read as unrelated. Genesis then dramatises the Great Wars themselves, carrying that magic, mythology and lineage forward, and Legends covers the races emerging and the Four Lands forming. So it is one continuous story, constructed retroactively, and the join is itself a reveal. On reading order, two independent book order references report that Brooks recommends publication order and explicitly advises against reading chronologically on a first pass. The substance is well corroborated; the exact wording could not be captured because his official site was unreachable during research, so treat the recommendation as his position rather than as a verbatim quote. The television series is the other thing worth stating plainly. The Shannara Chronicles ran two seasons of ten episodes, verified from two independent sources, the first on MTV from January 2016 and the second on Spike, later rebranded Paramount Network, from October 2017. Season one adapts The Elfstones of Shannara, which is the second novel of the original trilogy, and the production's stated plan was to begin there and leave The Sword of Shannara for later. Sword was never adapted. Season two is not a straight adaptation of any single novel and is better described as a mix drawn from across the trilogy, so no specific book should be attached to it. It was cancelled in January 2018 after a ratings collapse that is well documented: season one ran between 0.72 and 1.03 million viewers, season two between 0.16 and 0.31 million, with every episode under half a million. It was shopped to other networks and not picked up. Do not treat the show as a gateway to the books' chronology; it adapts one book out of more than thirty and never touches the modern world material. A few dates are contested. Wards of Faerie is given as August 2012 in one place and February 2013 in another, the latter probably the paperback, and one reference puts Bloodfire Quest in 2012 against 2013 elsewhere; the best supported set is 2012, 2013 and 2013. The Skaar Invasion is given as both 18 and 19 June 2018. The story positions for the two First Druids books are inferred from their subject matter, the origin of the Druid order and of the Warlock Lord, rather than stated by any source, and are flagged as unconfirmed here for that reason. Terry Brooks announced semi-retirement in March 2025 and handed the series to Delilah S. Dawson, who wrote the second First Druids book. Also not listed here, because they are short works rather than novels: Indomitable from 2003, the Dark Wraith of Shannara graphic novel from 2008, and the Paladins of Shannara e-novellas. On rights, Warner Bros. held film rights from 2007 until they expired in 2010 and reverted to Brooks; television rights went to Farah Films with Sonar Entertainment in 2012, and Sonar was later absorbed into a company that went bankrupt in 2024, so where those rights sit today is a genuine open question for anyone hoping for a revival.
