New Spring is a prequel published between books ten and eleven, and it belongs neither first nor last.
Fourteen novels, one prequel and a television series that got through about a third of the story before it was cancelled. Read the books in publication order and slot the prequel in later; the show is a separate thing you can take or leave.

The whole thing starts here, and it is the only volume that works as a novel on its own, so it is a fair test of whether the other thirteen are for you.
Picks up days later and introduces the Seanchan and the Horn of Valere, two threads the series keeps returning to for the next eight thousand pages.
Shifts the point of view away from the character you have been following, which is the structure the rest of the series uses, so this is where you learn how the books actually work.
The one most readers name as the best in the series and the point where it commits to its full scale, so it is the honest place to decide whether to carry on.
Then what? Keep going in publication order through book ten, Crossroads of Twilight. Read New Spring at that point, which is where it was published and where it works best. Then Knife of Dreams, then the last three by Brandon Sanderson. The Amazon series is worth trying only afterwards, and only if you accept it as a different version rather than the same story filmed.
